It feels as though it’s been a while since I’ve written about my loft treasures and as there are so very many more books I’d like to share with you, I thought I’d post about some more now.
These four Usborne classics are actually all very popular with both C and H and I love the fact that they are genuinely using and enjoying books in their own childhood that were such an important part of mine.
This one is perfect for them both and we can spend up to an hour talking about each page (and funnily enough, this hour often happens to fall at the exact time we’re supposed to be getting ready in the morning or tidying up at night…)
‘Round The World – Picture Word Book’
The most beloved spread:
I remember spending so long as a child looking at each tiny detail in each and every picture and still managing to find something new each time. Although the books are intended as a means to further a child’s vocabulary, they can be used for so much more and the boys and I love making up stories about the characters and situations on each page.
The same is true of the next book, though it actually contains much more text to read aloud should you wish to do so.
‘Things People Do’
This book provides a really gentle transition into the non-fiction genre and actually encourages C to ask lots of questions that perhaps wouldn’t have come up otherwise. I remember finding it fascinating to read about the jobs that some people did of which I had absolutely no comprehension and it was a great way for me to realise that there was a really interesting world out there to explore.
The next book has actually proved quite useful in trying to explain a few mathematical concepts to C. I’m very wary of not reverting to ‘teacher mode’ with him and trying to remain his mum first and foremost, but he seems to be very interested in numbers and maths and it’s something he enjoys talking about. So, having uncovered this little beauty, C and I sat down and looked through it and he’s been having fun with it ever since!
‘The First Book Of Numbers’
He really likes looking at this next page, showing me that he understands the correlation between the written numbers and the groups of items that match each number, i.e., the number six written next to six objects. The lines drawn around each group of objects have also helped to explain ‘sets’ of numbers.
This next spread has served no purpose other than to blow his mind. At three years old, there’s no way he’d be expected to have a comprehension of what huge numbers like a thousand might look like or what they might mean, but he still really enjoys looking at this page that, according to him, shows, “A-lot-a-lot-A-LOT of birds!”
The final book is one that makes me giggle each time they boys choose it. C very seriously comes up and tells me that we’re going to learn some French now, because we’re looking at The French Book. The fact that I am probably mispronouncing at least half the words doesn’t matter a jot to either of the boys and C’s attempts to repeat the words back in French back are probably just as intelligible, if not more so. We’ve talked a bit about the importance of learning about other countries and trying to master other languages (though neither M or I are fluent in one) and C feels very proud of his own small contribution to building bridges with our European allies.
The size of these books makes them easy to handle for both C and H and as mentioned above, the detailed pictures provide hours of amusement. These loft treasures are definitely not heading back into the attic any time soon!
